The blood sugar disease, also known as diabetes mellitus, occurs relatively often in cats. It is a metabolic disorder associated with chronic elevation of blood sugar levels. Normally, sugar levels are regulated by the pancreatic hormone insulin. Blood sugar levels rise after food consumption. The pancreas is activated and produces insulin. Insulin is the only hormone that can reduce blood sugar levels by supporting the transport of glucose from the blood to the cells. A disruption of this cycle due to various causes results in hyperglycemia (blood sugar level: 200 to 250 mg/dl). Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes in cats. Treatment consists of two components. The main one is the administration of insulin, and this is supported and supplemented by dietary nutrition, such as INTEGRA PROTECT Diabetes, which is particularly high in protein and low in starch, while also being grain-free, making it suitable for cats with related intolerances.
